Protein Shakes
Why Protein Shakes?
Ready to Drink or RTD protein shakes are similar to the protein shakes you make from powder, expect these are ready-made. Like protein bars, they are useful to busy bodybuilders or atheletes who just don't have enough time to mix up a protein shake. The downside to them is that they are just not as economical as protein powder but can be useful during the times that mixing a protein shake would be a problem. They are to all intents and purposes just as good as the shakes made from protein powder and some say they taste even better.
Advantages
- No need to prepare
- Useful if you're in a hurry
Disadvantages
- More expensive in the long run
Types of Protein Shakes
Just like other forms of whey protein, ready to drink protein shakes come in many forms.
Pure protein - These RTD shakes just contain protein. No carbs for fuel nor glucose. They are great if you have gotten your carbs elsewhere and just need the extra protein boost post-workout.
Recovery drinks - These RTD drinks are designed to be taken immediately after a workout and contain all you need to build muscle and get through the day. They contain both carbs to give you fuel for the rest of the day and protein to build muscle.
Choosing a Protein Shake
When choosing a good protein shake be mindful of the amount of calories, protein and sodium. If you're trying to lose weight, make sure the calorie content of the RTD shake is not too high. Also, check the protein content. Just because it's a protein shake it doesn't mean it's got enough protein for your needs. Lastly, be sure to check the sodium or salt content. Many foodstuffs appear to be low in calories and fat but have a surprisingly high amount of sodium inside. Too much sodium is not only bad for your health but will slow down your fat loss including other health problems.
