Body Building Supplementation – What are the Best Supplements?
Most body builders know that nutrition, closely followed by supplementation, is absolutely vital when it comes to building muscle successfully. Without taking the correct food and supplements into your body, all the hard work that has been put into the proper training will have been for noting – essentially wasted.
When it comes to supplementation, unfortunately nowadays you will find many, many so-called supplement companies just trying to market rubbish, and as such the vast majority of supplementation products currently on the market are just that. In saying that though, there are of course many reputable companies plying their ware, and to them we are grateful. As body builders though, there are three main forms of supplementation we should be concentrating on. We shall list these below.
Protein Powder – Many body builders consider protein powder to be the number one product for their body building requirements. Most good protein powders, but especially whey protein powder, is not only packed full of great muscle-building protein, it is also low in carbohydrates and fat. On top of this, powdered protein is often much cheaper than other protein products on the market. Many body builders do not even consider protein powder as a supplement – instead thinking of it as a part of their staple diet.
Branched Chain Amino Acids – Although most body builders consider getting vast amounts of protein into them as their number one dietary/supplement goal, the so-called building blocks of protein, amino acids, are thought to be the top supplement amongst the body building fraternity (once protein powder has been taken off the supplement list and placed on the essential nutrition list, that is).
Moreover, recent scientific research has proven that branch chain amino acids are key in preventing any muscle loss during dieting or toning up for competition, as well as helping in muscle gain during those “bulking up” times. Unlike protein powder though, amino acids can be fairly expensive.
Creatine – Creatine as a body building supplement has been at the centre of the sport for almost as long as protein supplementation has. It is also a scientifically proven supplement and although this substance is a protein in its own right that is actually produced by the body, many body builders have reported benefits to their overall strength or lifting routines in the gym when they supplemented with it each day.
Creatine is basically linked to the faster production of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) in muscle cells, which is expended as a form of energy, allowing a body builder (in particular) to manage slightly heavier weights or to do a few more repetitions. Although to somebody with no interest in the sport this small boost in performance may not sound like much at all, to a seasoned body builder even just one extra pound or one extra rep in the set can mean some great benefits in terms of results.
